Unlike our personality, our approach to conflict is learned. And it can be changed. A lot of us avoid conflict, or we are overly accommodating. The good news is we can develop competencies that make us effective in dealing with conflict. We love working with someone who thinks and talks like us. However, we can struggle immensely when we work with someone with a totally difference communication style. Here's the challenge. 80% of conflict is due to style and not content, but we tend to assume we disagree on content. If can learn to recognize different communication styles, we can tailor our style to match theirs, we can find common ground.
